02.08.2024 – With its catalogue “augmented” by the semantic web, Inapp publications enhance users’ search and response capabilities. Through its participation in the Wikidata Group for Museums, Archives, and Libraries, the Institute is following the trend of other research institutions by making its documentary and bibliographic heritage available in an open and highly interoperable environment. This initiative allows for more comprehensive and personalised navigation.
The advantages of being present on Wikidata are numerous. By consulting the catalogue of publications, users can simultaneously access links to other controlled vocabularies and encyclopedias, thereby deepening their understanding of topics. Wikidata also incorporates bibliographic tools such as Scholia, which provides constantly updated information through graphical visualisations. “These tools can autonomously process information,” explains project manager Chiara Carlucci, “by identifying new relationships and links between data. This increases the potential for connecting with new research groups and communities. Collaborations with different authors or organisations are displayed, topics addressed over time are visualised, and the presence of researchers in library catalogues worldwide is monitored and verified. This interconnection acts as a multiplier for connections with potentially infinite resources.”
This initiative also means becoming an active part of a development community and adhering to a manifesto that promotes the open dissemination of public research content. The project page includes video tutorials that demonstrate navigation by ‘authors’, ‘works’, and ‘keywords’, and explain the project phases, which can be replicated in similar contexts.
The future holds many possibilities, and Inapp is laying the groundwork to meet the challenges within its scientific community and beyond, considering the developments that AI already hints at.
“Interoperability will be further extended with the creation of the institute’s Community of Researchers in OA.INAPP (ePerson) and the enhancement of the Linked Open Data (LOD) environment,” Carlucci continues, “thanks to the development of a web app that will provide users with an immediate and effective research experience, yielding more comprehensive results than ever before.”
