Survey on the evolution of organisational structures and processes of Italian enterprises

Objective: To analyse the transition of the Italian production system from organisational models, designed primarily for the mass production of goods and services, to flexible organisational models capable of producing smaller quantities of goods and services that are predominantly innovative, high-quality products, and above all in line with market demands, as well as the consequent repercussions of such innovation in terms of internal human resource management within enterprises and, more generally, of human capital in the broader labour market.
Survey unit: businesses with 20 employees or more
Data collection technique: CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing).

The objective of the survey – initiated by the Inapp research group “Work Atlas and Skills Analysis” –  is to analyse the organisational models of enterprises in the Italian production system, with a focus on three specific issues: inter-firm relations and outsourcing of production and labour; internationalisation and delocalisation strategies and product and process innovations; and the use of flexible working arrangements with a focus on human resources and skills needs.

The data, collected using a CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) methodology, are used to produce aggregate statistics following the classification system adopted in the Work Atlas and will serve as the basis for in-depth studies directed at policymakers at national level and stakeholders involved in the issues of work organisation. The research will involve a sample of about 9,000 businesses with 20 employees or more, including a range of private entities operating in different industries and throughout the country. Sample lists were extracted from Inapp’s archives.

The survey is financed through the European Social Fund (ESF) and implemented by Inapp as the Intermediate Body of PON SPAO, based on the 2018-2020 Work Plan and subsequent  2021-2023 update.
