The Quality of Work (QdL) survey is a recurring sample survey designed to study the quality of work in Italy. First launched in 2002 and now in its fifth edition, it draws on the European Working Condition Survey (EWCS) conducted by Eurofound. QoW investigates subjective and objective aspects of work and considers the factors that determine its quality, including: working conditions (contract types, working hours, incomes, etc.); the physical environment; health conditions; the social atmosphere in the workplace; the alignment between a worker’s expectations and employment characteristics; opportunities for development through training activities; organisational goals and practices in the workplace; and work life balance.
The survey makes it possible to monitor and assess the quality of work of both employees and the self-employed, detect trends and changes taking place in the labour market, and contribute to policy development on issues affecting job quality and employment. The survey involves 15,000 employed people over 18, and 5,000 single- or multi-location local units from the non-agricultural private sector. The main objective of the survey on local units/enterprises, set up since 2015, is to analyse their different organisational patterns and to understand how these, together with the strategies implemented by local units/enterprises (human resource management, innovation and competitiveness), influence the quality of work for employees.
The survey is included in the National Statistical Plan (code IAP-00009) and the survey technique is CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing).
